Hmmm. . . . .

Ok, so I've had no less than four people in the last six months ask me for advice/tips/warnings about flying with kids or babies.

I suppose I'm as good a source as any.  Between the time Keilana was 3 weeks old and 17 months old, I flew with her five times, three of them by myself (once by myself and 6 months pregnant, with very crowded planes, three flights each way, and three different delays roundtrip).   Then when Dylan was 14 months old and Keilana was just a few months shy of 3, I flew with both of them by myself.  That trip was only two flights and one layover, but the plane that we were supposed to take out of Salt Lake to fly to Fresno got stuck in a snow storm in Bozeman, so our hour and a half long layover turned into a 3 and a half hour layover (all past bedtime, of course).

Here's a few things I've learned: flying with babies is (mostly) a piece of cake.  Especially little babies.  They will frequently sleep for large chunks of the flight, if not all of it (this was even true for my non-sleeper).  They tend to be bothered by the fast change in altitude, but are usually easily soothed by nursing, a bottle or a pacifier.  We flew from LAX to Newark (as you can imagine, that's a LONG day) with Dylan when he was 8 months old and it was so easy that I frequently forget he came along.

With toddlers, long flights can be difficult because, lets face it, most toddlers hate being confined.  But in a plane, they can't get away.   Flight attendants are (mostly) well-trained and disposed to deal with little people, so they can't really cause any damage.  And even if they do end up screaming at you, even the most determined toddler can only scream for so long before their body will give out, and chances are you'll never see any of those strangers who are shooting you nasty looks again.

No, the real trouble with toddlers is layovers.  There are so many people and so many things going on in an airport, they are places of much interest to these little people who are just discovering the world.  I recommend packing as lightly as possible for carry-ons and bringing a leash so you are free to roam the airport without too much trouble or fatigue.

So that being said, a few essentials to pack in your diaper bag/backpack/purse:
Funny books or activity books:  Peek-a-boo or lift-the-flap books are great, but ones with buttons, velcro, zippers, etc. are even better.  I do not, however, recommend coloring books--who wants to be picking up crayons off the floor between those crowded airplane seats?
Graham crackers are good, but Teddy Grahams are better.  Especially if your kid doesn't usually get them.
Suckers or jelly beans/M&M's--trust me, even if you usually feed your child is organic produce, those moments when the books aren't interesting anymore, the toys have been discarded and the kids would rather kick the seat of the snobby co-ed in front of him or play a violent game of peek-a-boo with the grumpy old man behind you who just wants to read his book and be left alone can be quickly salvaged by offering to practice colors with a handful of M&M's or eating a dum-dum and pointing out all the neat stuff you can see (or pretend to see) out the window.
A change of clothes for each child you are traveling with.  With infants, especially if they're breastfed, you're bound to have a giant poop explosion at some point.  With toddlers, a diaper may leak, or they'll probably spill juice all down the front of their clothes at some point.  And if you use the M&M distraction method mentioned above, you should be forewarned that a toddler can somehow turn a single M&M into a giant chocolate orgy that cover their entire body (and half of yours).
And always, always, always bring more diapers than you think you could possibly need.

Now the last item I have never actually traveled with myself, but being the mother of two children who both love to run, are extremely good climbers, and one who would leave with any stranger who smiled and offered him a lollipop, I think its invaluable: a backpack leash.  Most small children love to wear backpacks--it makes them feel grown up.  If you get one that is also a leash, you both win, and a stranger with lollipops does not have an opportunity to steal your child.

All that being said, we have a 20 minute fueling stop in Sacramento where we don't have to deplane, and that's our only stop.  Three and a half straight hours on a plane and we'll arrive in Spokane.  NO LAYOVERS!!!!!  I'm so grateful for that.  Wish us luck!

No, it wasn't Willy Wonka!

Ok, so on my Facebook page, I have listed as one of my favorite quotes, "How far that little candle throws his beam!/So shines a good deed in a weary world", which comes from The Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare.  My brother told me that he liked it and had always thought it was a Willy Wonka quote.  When I explained that the original Willy Wonka movie was peppered with literary quotes, he asked if I knew where another one was from.

Years ago, I compiled a list of quotes from the movie and where they originated.  Some of them I recognized immediately, others I had to scour for.  After some searching, I discovered I still had it.  Here are some quotes that are not, in fact, original to Willy Wonka:

"Where is fancy bread?
In the heart or in the head?"
-This is also from Merchant of Venice (Shakespeare)

"Is it my soul that calls upon my name?"
-Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet)

"Oh, you should never, never doubt what nobody is sure about"
-Hilaire Belloc (a poem called The Microbe)

"Up the airy mountain
down the rushing glen
we dare not go a-hunting
for fear of little men."
-William Allingham (The Fairies)

"The suspense is terrible. I hope it'll last."
-Oscar Wilde (The Importance of Being Earnest)

"Across the desert lies the promised land!"
-paraphrase of Havelock Ellis

"All I ask is a tall ship and a star to sail her by."
-John Masefield (Sea Fever)

"Round the world and home again, that's the sailor's way!"
-William Allingham

"We are the music makers
and we are the dreamers of dreams"
-Arthur O'Shaughnessy (Ode)

"Candy is dandy but liquor is quicker"
-Ogden Nash

"A thing of beauty is a joy forever."
-John Keats

"Open your mouth a little wider when you speak"
-Lewis Carroll (Alice in Wonderland)

I'm sure there are others I have missed, but these are all the ones I have listed.  I've never been able to find the ingenius line "If the good Lord had intended us to walk, he wouldn't have invented roller skates" anywhere else, so perhaps it is indeed a Wonka original.  So there you have it.  Let me know if you know of any I haven't included!.

Grrr! Floppy ankles!!

So Sunday after Church I asked the Bishop if I could talk to him for a couple of minutes.  I intended to really only be in there for about two minutes to pass along some information about the girls and some suggestions for his 4th Sunday lesson.  But being that its Kindon, of course he asked several unassuming, caring questions and I ended up in there talking with him for about 45 minutes.  Long enough for my right leg to fall asleep while sitting crossed over my left.

So I stand up to walk out, no problem.  But as soon as I take a step forward on my right foot and come down on it with all my weight, it kind of buckles, as legs tend to do when they're asleep.  That wouldn't be such a big deal, except for the combination of my horrible ankles that have been sprained too many times to be terribly strong and the fact that I was wearing heals.  Snap! Ankle rolls and pops.

So now its all swollen and purple (my favorite color!!) and I can only bear weight on it for little spurts, so my house is kind of a disaster and Keilana is rather cranky about not going to the park at all the last two days.  Can't say I blame her, since I also can't play any active games with them, so we have to read, or color or play catch or the games have to be just her and Dylan.  And she likes all that, but ALL day?  She just has far too much energy to be contained in a house all day.  It makes that little Tigger crazy.

So here's hoping it will be more or less healed by Sunday.  It is going to be a real trial getting through the airport with both my monkeys and our stuff if I'm still limping like this.  Thank goodness its a direct flight! A layover might kill me! LOL

Keilana's 4th Birthday Party

                                                              The birthday princess.
Cheesing out with all her presents (except the big gift bag from Gma that you can't see in this pic).
Being particularly excited about her new Waterpillar from Aunt Bella.

Blowing out the candles. (Dylan thinks he was actually blowing them  out from way down there).
Enjoying a piece of cake and some ice cream in all her royal jewels.

Dylan telling Aunt Rachel off for tickling him and interrupting his swimming.

Happily splashing while singing "Sha-la-la-la My oh my and don't be shy come on KISSSSS the girl!"

Such great family!

So, after Keilana's birthday yesterday, I just have to say how grateful I am for her big, wonderful family.  Just after lunch, her auntie Amanda and cousin Clayton called and sang her happy birthday.   Less than an hour later, her Grandma Katy and aunt Rachel called and sang her happy birthday, too.  Later in the afternoon, her aunt Melissa called to wish her a happy birthday and listened patiently and enthusiastically while Keilana rambled on and on about all her birthday plans.  Just before dinner, her auntie Jen called to wish her a happy birthday, too, right before auntie Amanda and Sarah arrived to drop off presents.

While we were doing some errands yesterday evening, my Mom called to wish Keilana happy birthday and tell her package was on the way.  This morning we got Yaya's package and a delightful singing card from Gwen, Todd, Maysa (who signed her own name with impressive skill, I might add!!) and Paisley.  A package from my sister, Christa, had already arrived last Saturday for her.

I'm so glad I've got such wonderful family, and glad for Keilana.  So, that being said, I'm going to try to be better about birthday cards and/or phone calls myself, since I'm pretty lousy about it.  Perhaps we can get ourselves together in time to send something to Maysa for her birthday! :)

Can you believe she's FOUR?!

Hard to believe that four years ago this afternoon I was halfway through my second day of trying to get Keilana out of my tummy.  :)   She was an 8lb 3oz bundle of blubber (as her daddy says, she looked like a Shar pei dog).  Now she's about 45" tall, weighs between 42-45 pounds, and says things like "Mommy this flower smells lovely!" and "Thank you for dinner Mommy, it was delicious!"

So, in her four years, Keilana has lived in 7 different apartments or houses and four different towns, she has taken six airplane rides (counting all the round trips as one ride), has swam in the ocean and sat beside a mountain lake at 10,000 feet.  She's been hiking in the Sierras, played in lakes in the Rockies, picked oranges off the trees and helped make apple cider in the fall.  What an adventurous four years!!  It suits her that she came first, while we were still in a relatively gypsy-like phase of our life; if there's one thing you can say about Keilana, its that she loves to go! Mom jokes that she's still never seen the child walk--always run, bounce, jump, skip, but never just walk.  Its still hard to say whether she'll have more affection for the beach or the ocean.  While her mommy and daddy both love the beach (and miss it when we haven't been in a while), their first love is the mountains.  So far she gets equally excited about both.  I think she'll end up a mountain girl.  She loves the cold, crisp mountain air, and while she loves the beach, the ocean still makes her a little nervous.

She's such a funny kid.  This morning she walked down the stairs, saw Doug for the first time and said, "Good morning, Daddy."  Then when he started to leave, she shouted, "Daddy, I have to love you first!"  We ran upstairs so she could wave out the window as he got in the car and she said, "Goodbye Daddy! I'll see you later! I love you!"  She always wants attention and affection and is so happy to please people.  She's like a human Tigger most of the time, and happy to be so.  She likes to be the big sister, helping Dylan do things and figure things out (not that he needs or accepts much help!) and on days when I've got a lot going on or am very, very tired, she's even occasionally helped get him dressed and fed.

Her first four years have gone by so fast!  Its crazy how life just flies by.  We're having a party for her Saturday evening, so I'll post more pictures after that. In the mean time, happy birthday to Keilana!

Signs of the times. . .

I snapped these on our way home from the park today. The yellow one is the cheapest gas in town by quite a bit.  The teal one is closer to a county-wide average.  Earthquakes and natural disasters in diverse places, and the collapse of the Promised Land's economy!  Uggh.  Glad we can still fit the whole fam in a small car!
